Meet Our Surgeons

ABDUL RASHEED KHAN, M.D.

Dr. Abdul Rasheed Khan is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreo-retinal surgeon. Born and raised in New Orleans, he built his early medical career caring for patients in Louisiana before establishing his practice in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. As the youngest graduate of his medical school class, Dr. Khan completed the Advanced (Accelerated) Medical Scholars Program at Louisiana State University in Shreveport and LSU School of Medicine. Through this program, he earned his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees in six years at age 23. He maintained the Dean's List during undergraduate studies, received multiple scholarships, and earned distinguished honors on medical school examinations.

Dr. Khan completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Louisiana State University Medical Center, then served as a clinic professor at its Primary Care Clinic, supervising resident physicians. He pursued ophthalmology residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and a surgical retina fellowship at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.

After fellowship, Dr. Khan continued as a staff physician in the Department of Ophthalmology's Section of Retina at Ochsner Clinic Foundation. He also treated patients with advanced retinal disease at Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma, Louisiana, and supervised ophthalmology residents until Hurricane Katrina disrupted care across the Gulf Coast in August 2005.

Following several months of displacement, Dr. Khan joined the Vitreo-Retinal Institute of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, where he served as a principal physician for more than four years. During that period he cared for patients with retinal, vitreous, and macular disease throughout Baton Rouge and surrounding communities. His prior honors include an ophthalmological associate role with Research to Prevent Blindness, recognition in the Cambridge Who's Who registry, and listing among top vitreo-retinal surgeons by the Consumers' Research Council of America.

Dr. Khan has a special interest in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and vitreo-retinal interface abnormalities such as epiretinal membranes and macular holes. He has published and lectured on advanced diabetic macular edema and complex macular degeneration, including treatment approaches that combine laser photocoagulation with intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy for persistent diabetic edema. He is one of a select group of North Texas surgeons fellowship-trained in vitreous and retina surgery and now sees referred patients at Southwest Eye Clinics in Mesquite.

Dr. Khan is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He maintains membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dallas County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology, Louisiana State Medical Society, and East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society. Dr. Khan is proficient in English, Urdu, and Hindi, and is conversant in Spanish and Arabic.
