ABDUL RASHEED KHAN, M.D.
Dr. Abdul Rasheed Khan is a Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon. Born and raised in New Orleans, he spent most of his medical career assisting patients in his home state of Louisiana. As the youngest graduate of his medical school class, Dr. Khan was part of the prestigious Advanced (Accelerated) Medical Scholars Program at Louisiana State University of Shreveport and LSU School of Medicine. Through this program, Dr. Khan was able to obtain his Bachelors of Science (B.S.) and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees in six years at the age of just 23. Along the way, he earned numerous distinctions and honors, which includes maintaining the Dean’s List throughout his undergraduate studies, being the recipient of multiple various scholarships, and receiving distinguished honors during medical school examinations.
Remaining at his alma mater for clinical training, Dr. Khan successfully completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Louisiana State University Medical Center. At the completion of this training, he stayed at the institution to act as a Clinic Professor at its Primary Care Clinic, overseeing the work of other resident physicians. Dr. Khan then entered into a specialized surgical training program, pursuing an Ophthalmology residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and a Surgical Retina fellowship at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.
Following his vitreo-retinal surgery fellowship, Dr. Abdul Rasheed Khan, continued as a Staff Physician in the Department of Ophthalmology’s Section of Retina at Ochsner Clinic Foundation. Concurrently, he worked at Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma, Louisiana, treating patients with advanced retinal diseases and overseeing the training of ophthalmology residents until August 29, 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.
During this time, Dr. Khan found himself displaced for several months before joining Baton Rouge’s premiere retina practice, the Vitreo-Retinal Institute of Louisiana. For more than four years, Dr. Khan functioned as a principal at the Baton Rouge institution. During his tenure, he treated patients with retinal, vitreous, and macular diseases throughout Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas. His work at the Baton Rouge facility earned Dr. Khan many honors, including a role as an Ophthalmological Associate with Research to Prevent Blindness; a listing in the 2009-2010 Edition of Cambridge Who’s Who Registry of Executives, Professionals, and Entrepreneurs as a lifetime member; and a ranking in the Vitreo-Retinal Surgery category of Consumers’ Research Council of America’s Top Physicians.
Dr. Khan has special interest in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and vitreo-retinal interface abnormalities, such as epiretinal membranes and macular holes. Dr. Khan is a pioneer in the treatment of advanced diabetic macular edema and complex macular degeneration. He has worked extensively at developing novel algorithms for layering laser photocoagulation into treatment paradigms of intra-vitreal Avastin injections for patients with recalcitrant diabetic edema. He is one of a select group of North Texas surgeons who are fellowship-trained in vitreous and retina surgery.
